Finding the Motivation to Succeed

There’s a certain level of committment required to succeed at most anything worth having in life. If you think about it, even when starting a job you will need to find the motivation to learn new skills to reach any level of success. If you go in there and are unteachable, you won’t be employed for very long.
Motivation comes in the absence of excuses. We all have them:
“I don’t have time,”
“I’m too tired,”
“xyz needs my attention right now,”
“I’ll do it tomorrow.”
You get the point.
The only thing keeping you from what you really want is the story that you have about why you can’t have it.
– Tony Robbins
For me personally, I can talk myself out of doing something in a flash. That takes no effort. Task complete! β
Identify the Goal and Limiting Beliefs
The first thing you need to do, is to identify the thing that is holding you back from reaching that goal. You can use the 7-Levels of Why exercise to uncover the real reasons why you want to achieve some goal or conversely, what stands in your way of achieveing that goal. Basically, you ask a question. Then, answer the question, and then follow up each answer with “Why.” Why do you want that, or Why do you feel that way?
Sometimes a lack of motivation might be due to a lack of belief in your abilities. These are called Limiting Beliefs. Using the 7-Levels of Why exercise, identify any blocks you may have. Then rewire those limiting beliefs into the positive. For example, “I’m too old” can be rewritten as, “I have the wisdom and life experiences that younger people do not.”
Multi-Tasking will Lead to Crash and Burn
Do you know anyone who claims that they are a pro at multi-tasking? Multi-tasking can lead to accomplishing many things, but most are half-assed.

When you laser focus on one thing, that one thing will instill a sense of deep connection with the project. You will always experience a higher level of success and achievement when you put your heart and soul into accomplishing that one thing.
And guess what?
Your emotional connection to that one thing will propel you foward and motivate you to accomplish the next thing. And that, my friend, creates momentum.
Use the Power of Music to Get your Ass Moving
Our brains are hardwired to respond to music. Tapping into the power of musical pieces that boost your mood and energy levels is a great way to get you out of a slump and motivate you to take action. I personally have created playlists for different moods. My Fun playlist contains toe-tapping music that makes me smile (think: Happy, by Pharrell Williams). My Gym playlist contains OG hip-hop songs that get my ass moving or cause me to feel powerful. Create your own playlists.
Go Outside
Even the most energized people will eventually get run down if they spend too much time indoors. When learning how to self-motivate to reach your goals, donβt make the mistake of burning the midnight oil and staying confined to your desk. Get outside and spend time in nature every day. This is a perfect way to take a break, boost energy and replenish your self-motivation. Aim for at least 20 minutes of sunlight and movement. This is always my goal and I end up outside for 90 minutes or more! It’s contagious.
Focus on Gratitude
It’s so easy to fall into the negativity trap. Take time each day to write out at least 3 things you are grateful for. It can be as small as watching the ant colony hard at work, or being grateful you have a spoon to use for savoring your favorite yogurt.
The more you look at everything good in your life, the more of it you will attract – and the easier it will be to self-motivate to attract even more.
Give It All You Got
At the end of the day, when you give everything that you have into your dreams, it gives you a sense of pride and self-confidence that nothing else can give you.
There’s nothing like that feeling of going to sleep at night KNOWING that you gave it everything you had and are one step closer towards your goal. To me, that is a successful day. When you add those days together, you’ll have success and a life beyond your wildest dreams.

This blog post really resonated with me. I often find myself making excuses and talking myself out of taking action towards my goals. The reminder that motivation comes in the absence of excuses is so powerful. I appreciate the suggestion to identify limiting beliefs and rewire them into positive affirmations.
