If you had read my bio, you would have discovered that I have been afflicted with Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS). This problem that I struggle with is threaded throughout my life – not just online. And I know for a fact that it has killed my chances of experiencing real success in life.
Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS)
Some people are able to work with laser-like focus. They have a dream, create actionable goals, and hit their pre-determined milestones with relative ease.
Me? I have a dream. I also have goals. Then I create new goals. And then while researching, I discover a different way to go about attaining success and that’s the path I follow – and so the cycle continues.
SOS is exactly what it sounds like: You catch something sparkling out of the corner of your eye and you can’t help but to be drawn to it – and away from your original path.
The Problem with Shiny Object Syndrome
Seriously, I need to call out the SOS. The problem with Shiny Object Syndrome is that you remain in a constant state of beginning something and never progress to actually living and being something.
Do You Have Shiny Object Syndrome?
There are ways to evaluate as to whether or not you may be afflicted with SOS if you exhibit the following qualities (though this list is not, by any means, exhaustive):
- Have a list of ideas that are never executed
- Ever complete a project
- Have a repository of domain names – something akin to a domain name hoarder
- Jump from one internet course to another
- Have a collection of paid themes, plugins and tools that have never been used
What is the Root Cause of SOS?
Distraction is the root cause of SOS – and it’s killing your chances of experiencing true success. Despite what your brain is telling you, you will not find a better opportunity, or the achieve success more quickly by jumping from one course or business opportunity to another.
In this business, A Jack of all Trades is a Master of None. If you have any real desire to become an expert in your field and to experience what true success feels like, you must work at it every single day. Only then will you see any measurable results.
There is a huge difference between beginner, intermediate, and expert in any line of work. If you allow SOS to take over your life, you will remain stuck as a beginner in most everything you attempt. Is that how you want your life to be?
“Uh … Yes … Hello. My name is AJ, I’m 50 years old, and I am just beginning life …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… again.”
“Hello … AJ here. This is my 4,567th attempt at beginning life ………….. again.”
“Yup … I’ve finally found the secret to beginning life, again. I’m positive it’s going to work for me this time. This new formula that I’m going to follow is fire.”
How’s that hit ya? This is no joke.
